Chiefly studio portrait photographs of Charles Martin, Sr. (or Carlo Martinoia, as his name appears on the versos of some prints); his wife Catherine Traversi Martin; their sons Charles Gilbert Martin and Arnold Martin; and other Martin family members and relatives including Linda Martin Moretti, Fiorenzo Moretti, Leopold Martin, Josephina Martin, Emiline Martin, Marie Martin, Joseph Traversi, Josephine Traversi, Delfina Martin Patocchi, and Ben Patocchi. Also includes portraits, group portraits and views of churches and other points of interest taken in Locarno, Cevio and Maggia, Switzerland.

Charles Martin was born in Switzerland in 1830. He came to San Francisco in 1852. In 1856 Martin settled in Marin County where he developed ranch land in the Chileno Valley of the former San Antonio township. He died in 1905.
